چکیده
Does Schooling Affect Health Behavior? Evidence from the Educational Expansion in Western Germany During the postwar period German states pursued policies to increase the share of young Germans obtaining a university entrance diploma (Abitur) by building more academic track schools, but the timing of educational expansion differed between states. This creates exogenous variation in the availability of higher education, which allows estimating the causal effect of education on health behaviors. Using the number of academic track schools in a state as an instrumental variable for years of schooling, we investigate the causal effect of schooling on health behavior such as smoking and related outcomes such as obesity. We find large negative effects of education on smoking. These effects can mostly be attributed to reductions in starting rates rather than increases in quitting rates. We find no causal effect of education on reduced overweight and obesity. JEL Classification: I12, I20

Does Schooling Improve Your Health? Evidence from the Educational Expansion in Western Germany
In this paper we use German Microcensus data to investigate whether the positive relationship between higher levels of schooling and health is causal by exploiting a natural experiment in Western Germany. During the 1960’s and 1970’s the educational system greatly expanded in Western Germany, but the timing of the educational expansion differed between states. This introduces exogenous variatio...
متن کاملChanges in compulsory schooling and the causal effect of education on health: evidence from Germany.
In this paper we investigate the causal effect of years of schooling on health and health-related behavior in West Germany. We apply an instrumental variables approach using as natural experiments several changes in compulsory schooling laws between 1949 and 1969. These law changes generate exogenous variation in years of schooling both across states and over time. We find evidence for a strong...
متن کاملDoes the theory-driven program affect the risky behavior of drug injecting users in a healthy city? A quasi-experimental study
Background: The horror of HIV/AIDS as a non-curable, grueling disease is a destructive issue for every country. Drug use, shared needles and unsafe sex are closely linked to the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Modification or changing unhealthy behavior through educational programs can lead to HIV prevention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of theory-based education intervention ...

متن کاملChildren’s Work and Schooling: Does Gender Matter? Evidence from the Peru LSMS Panel Data
Using panel data from Peru, the paper investigates the determinants of time allocation of boys and girls to schooling, housework and income-generating activities. Specifically, it explores whether sickness, employment of adult women, infrastructure and female headship have different impacts on the time use of boys and girls. Girls mostly engage in housework and boys mostly work outside the home...
